I\u2019m not talking about things like \u201cyou can\u2019t drive over the speed limit\u201d or \u201cdon\u2019t wear white after Labor Day.\u201d No, I\u2019m talking about the limits someone tries to put on me due to their underestimation of my abilities. I hate hearing it because it can make me question my own abilities. That, in turn, usually leads to anger and a need to prove myself, demonstrating how wrong they are! It\u2019s a cognitive bias that trips up so many people, and it can be devastating at the negotiating table.<\/p>\n<p>Cognitive biases are ingrained in the way we interpret and process information. They\u2019re often described as systemic errors in our thought process that affect the decisions and judgements we make. They occur because our brain is constantly looking for ways to simplify the information it needs to process in order to help us interpret the world around us and to speed up decision-making. As such, we become susceptible to these biases.<\/p>\n<p>Biases can distort reality. They can impact our critical thinking, making it difficult to gather or exchange accurate information. They can lead us to avoid uncomfortable truths that we need to learn or prevent us from investigating root causes. They can lead to poor decision-making, distorted thinking, and even belief in conspiracy theories.<\/p>\n<p>Overconfidence is one of the most common cognitive biases that can impact our judgement. In fact, in his 2011 book,\u00a0<em>Thinking, Fast and Slow<\/em>, Daniel Kahneman called overconfidence \u201cthe most significant of the cognitive biases.\u201d It\u2019s this bias that leads to underestimating the opposition.<\/p>\n<p>At the negotiating table, underestimating the other side can lead to disastrous results, some of which may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Not taking the other party\u2019s needs or issues into account, resulting in one-sided proposals that can waste time and delay outcomes.<\/li>\n<li>Overestimating your power, which can lead to deadlock or the other party walking away.<\/li>\n<li>Not treating the other party with respect, which can force everyone into their egos, resulting in scenarios where \u201csaving face\u201d is more important than actual deal outcomes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Also, think about the impact on the other party. When I\u2019m on the receiving end of another party\u2019s overconfidence, I\u2019m pushed into my ego, which results in a bad situation for the both of us. When I\u2019m in that place, I no longer want to just create a valuable deal \u2014 I want total domination. It\u2019s actually no longer about the deal \u2014 it\u2019s personal. The other side\u2019s overconfidence bias not only impacts their decision-making, but it impacts mine as well.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since we\u2019re all susceptible to cognitive biases, we should pay attention to how we\u2019re interpreting information and making decisions throughout a negotiation. Here are some tips for how to do that:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Be aware.<\/strong>\u00a0Yes, the first step to recovery is to be aware that you\u2019re susceptible to cognitive biases. If you\u2019re not aware, then you can\u2019t mitigate their impact. So be mindful of your own biases.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Challenge your beliefs.<\/strong>\u00a0Think critically about how you came to your conclusions. Find ways to expand your knowledge and seek alternative sources of information. Watch out for ideological myopia that can give you tunnel vision in terms of your beliefs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Seek other viewpoints.<\/strong>\u00a0It\u2019s not enough to gather more information from diverse sources. Actually seek out alternative opinions. Ask colleagues to play devil\u2019s advocate. Lay out your arguments to others and invite them to pick them apart.
