- Firstly, recognise when your method of resolving conflict isn’t working. I’m not saying don’t give persuasion, problem solving etc a go. Try them and if they work for you, great. And there may in fact be situations where they are the appropriate method to apply. But in this instance they weren’t cutting it. And when that is the case – move on. Don’t keep flogging a dead horse.
- Understand that often people may not do what you want them to just because you’d like them to. Give them a compelling reason – usually this is in the form of a sanction or incentive.
- Choose carefully! Mostly people prefer to receive rather than have something taken away from them. Ice cream is a lot more palatable than a prize toy being thrown in the bin. Take the time to learn what is of value to your counter party – what is their ‘ice cream’? Try to find a way to give this to them under terms which work for you.
- This is not to say that sanctions shouldn’t be used – but be aware these could be met unfavourably and could impact on relationships.
